Blue Rose

The greatest record ever made by the wonderful tenor saxophonist Glenroy Breakstone (1922-1995). A native of Millhaven, Illinois, Breakstone was one of the few musicians ever to be engaged by both Count Basie and Duke Ellington. “Blue Rose” was made in tribute to Mr. Brerakstone’s piano player and protégé, James Treadwell, one off the victims of the “Blue Rose” killer, and was issued on the Prestige label in 1958. Replacing Treadwell on piano, Tommy Flanagan plays with more than his customary degree of eloquence, passion, and lyricism. The CD, to be found in all serious jazz collections, is regarded as one of the music’s very few perfect recordings.

Side One:

"These Follish Things,” “But Not for Me,” “Someone to Watch Over Me,” and “Star Dust.”

Side Two:

“It's You or No One,” “Skylark,” “My Ideal,” “Tis Autumn,” “My Romance” and “Blues for james.”
