Kalender portrait from Leigh Jerman’s KILLERS AMONG US calender for 2002; a still shot of the ghostly figures Tim Underhill glimpsed at www.lostboylostgirl.com; and the horrific house (interior and exterior shots) at 3323 N Michigan Street...

Joseph Kalendar

Master carpenter and florid psychopath. Massive, secretive man who disliked having his face seen. A surly, awkward neighbor, and a thoroughgoing racist and homophobe. Original owner of 3323 N. Michigan Street, which he altered to his own bizarre specifications. Married and the father first of a son, then a daughter, Kalendar began his criminal career by breaking into women’s houses and stealing personal items, but soon graduated to raping, before long then killing, the women he discovered during his burglaries. Eventually, he began bringing his son along on his outings and encouraged the boy to participate in the rapes and murders. Shortly thereafter, he killed his son and disposed of his remains in his cellar. Subject to visions and hallucinations. Added hidden corridors to the interior of his house, then built a crude bedroom with a steeply pitched roof next to his kitchen, after that a giant wooden bed he placed in the added room. On the bed, he tortured and otherwise abused his daughter. Murdered his wife and burned her body in his furnace. Thereafter abducted women, took them to his house, and there terrorized and murdered them. Was apprehended, tried, found insane, and sent to a state facility. Murdered there by another inmate.

The fate of Kalendar’s daughter, Lily, has never been determined. If her father did not kill her, as seems likely, Lily Kalendar would probably have been taken into the Social Services network of Children’s Homes and foster homes. Her birth was never registered and no records exist.
